Really great article…wish I had seen something like this two years ago when I started into web design a lot more heavily.

Just to add to the comments about Photoshop/Fireworks/etc… learn to use what works for you. Fireworks is actually a great tool not only for creating web graphics, but for also rapid website mockups (also, it’s pixel perfect). Of course, it’s also Adobe/proprietary/etc… Anyone have suggestions for really good free or open source replacements for Fireworks?

Excellent suggestions for anyone interested in web development.

I’d second the “photoshop is for more than just photos” and also suggest you DO look into Fireworks – better image optimizations, and a few other reasons (google around, you’ll find a slew of information).

Now AJAX, when done properly, has NO affect on SEO! Just like most web development, certain aspects can have GREAT user impact and minimal system/SEO/accessibility impact if done properly.

Nice tips – I’ll agree with teh comments about Photoshop, it is very expensive for beginners – The Gimp http://www.gimp.org is a free alternative, and while its not on the same level… it does get you started.

Great article. Very true about the need to know JavaScript and AJAX. They will come in handle a lot, especially jQuery plugins.

Also, it’s a bit ironic that an advertisement for IE8 was present when I was reading this article.

About GIMP, it’s a great program and does import and export in PSD format.I use it all the time. But, the latest version of Photoshop CS4 is simply superior to anything out there if you have the cash. It can be found here for only $146.00

Of course the complete CS4 Suite will set you back 2 grand.
